KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF UMBILICAL CORD CARE AND NEONATAL SEPSIS IN INSTITUTE OF CHILD HEALTH, BANZAZZAU, ZARIA, KADUNA STATE

Medical and Health Sciences

ABSTRACT

Umbilical Cord remains the major means for the transmission of infection after birth and constitutes 33% of neonatal mortality in Nigeria. The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge and practice of umbilical cord care and neonatal sepsis among mothers in institute of child health, Banzazzau, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The research method was a survey design. One Hundred respondents were selected using simple random method. Data were collected using a researcher developed questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the supervisor and two members of the diploma in nursing education program. The reliability was established using a test re-test method at interval of two weeks. The reliability was established using spearman rank order correlation (rho) and a reliability estimate of 0.50 was obtained. Data collected were analyzed using the four point rating scale and mean methods. Findings revealed that there were gaps in the knowledge of mothers about standard cord care, some mothers applied other substances to the umbilical cord after they had cleaned it with methylated spirit and cotton wool. The major reason for the choice of materials used in umbilical cord care by mothers was because it was very effective and hastens cord separation. The technique for cord care was good among respondents. The outcome of cord care was poor as a significant number of respondents (10) agreed that their babies developed persistent fever in the course of umbilical cord care. In conclusion, there was a generally good knowledge of standard cord care among the respondents in this study. Unhygienic materials were used by some mothers in the care of the umbilical cord of their babies. Based on the findings, the study recommends that there should be increased home visits and education of the mothers by the health personnel to reduce the consequences of poor cord care after delivery.
